About American University
The American University (AU or American) is a special institution, federally leased scrutiny university in Washington, D.C. Its central campus extends 90 acres (36 ha) on Ward Circle, primarily in the Spring Valley community of Northwest D.C.
AU was reserved by an Act of Congress in 1893 at the prompting of Methodist bishop John Fletcher Hurst, who strived to establish an institution that would improve social service, internationalism, and realistic idealism. AU cracked ground in 1902, began in 1914, and approved its first undergraduates in 1925. Although affiliated with the United Methodist Church, religious affiliation is not a norm for admission.
American University Acceptance Rate
With 18,950 applicants this year and an admit rate of 31%, the new class of freshmen proved excellence at every level. The middle 50 percent GPA of acknowledged students for the Class of 2022 was 3.47- 4.00 and the middle 50 percent SAT score was 1240-1390. Plus, 42 percent of accepted students are from the Mid-Atlantic region, 12.5 percent are from the West Coast region, and 4.8 percent are international.
An additional 7 percent of AU’s recent eagles are first-era students and 64.8 percent are female. 7.4 percent of the class identifies as African American, 7.2 percent Asian, and 12 percent Hispanic.
An improvement in the perception of AU and a record number of applicants has resulted in a substantial decrease in AU’s accepted rate from 35 percent in 2015 to 25.7 percent in 2016. This resulted in a reduction from 46 percent in 2014 to 35 percent in 2015.
The Office of Admissions holistic strategy to bring about admissions verdicts has enabled it to recognize nominees for admission who are an incredible fit for AU, involving students who are intellectually interested and enthusiastic about building significant differences.
